What does Welsh wine taste like?

Open a bottle and you will be pleasantly surprised. Yes, this is a small country but wow, it produces wines with big flavours. Early ripening grape varieties, like Triomphe are suited to Wales and its cool, wet climate; the reds from this variety can have an abundance of fresh acidity and sharp redcurrants.

Seyval, Phoenix, Rondo and Welsh Pinot Noir have equally as much character and style as their European counterparts, great for everyday drinking and dining, whereas   2019 has flavours reminiscent of autumn fruits; savour its aromas of blackberry with hints of smoky vanilla.

Ancre Hill 2018   has discreet vanilla notes combined with inviting aromas of citrus and a palate of grapefruit and wet stone.

Of course, the best way to appreciate the taste of what Welsh viticulture offers is at the source. White Castle Vineyard on the gently sloping fields near Abergavenny offer informal tours where you can taste the bold flavours of their white, sparkling, rose, red and fortified, which are all vegan.

The perfect team

Welsh wine and Welsh food has to be a match made in heaven. Some of the current menu offerings available at the vineyards include in-house wines served with dishes such as Pant Du Welsh Rarebit Ciabatta, Sea Bass, Ginger and Lime Fishcake and Welsh Cheese and Leek Quiche. If you can’t visit the vineyard, you can take inspiration for what to cook at home.

A delicate white such as the  , made from a selected blend of grapes is the perfect cool tipple for summer barbecues and garden parties. Slightly floral aromas of elderflower and citrus on the palate, you can drink it on its own or pair up with shellfish, chicken or pasta.

Make sure to pick up a bottle of their   2018, a dry white that’s a perfect accompaniment with fish dishes.

The Pinot Noir 2019 red wine from Wales is easy drinking that pairs exceptionally well with tapas or light dishes of pork, chicken or pasta.

The delicacy, laverbread, a type of seaweed, cooked until soft, then minced into a paste is now somewhat of a flag waver for local cuisine and absolutely has to be eaten with the finest fizz.  So grab a bottle of chilled Ancre Hill sparkling rose or white and enjoy the magnificent combo.

Ancre Hill Vineyard situated on the outskirts of Monmouth in Wales, the estate currently comprises two vineyard sites, The Folly View and Newton Court Farm. Both sites benefit from south facing, well-draining limestone soils and long hours of sunshine – and relatively low rainfall!

Richard and Joy Morris’s venture into winemaking began in April 2006 with their first plantation of vines. Their south facing land with sheltered areas and good drainage provide ideal conditions for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes. Each field harvests a minimum of 2,000 bottles.

The vineyards are certified organic and follow biodynamic practices. They are Demeter Certified which means they use methods such as crop rotation, composting, and homeopathic sprays to cultivate the long-term health of the soil.
