Tell me more about the wine regions in America
The reputation of US wine is largely founded on the reputations of Napa and Sonoma counties, but is home to a vast and expansive wine industry across the whole country.
All of us know about Californian wines, and for good reason. California is responsible for the production of more than 80% of all US wine. The region has abundant sunshine and a long grape growing season. As it has such varied terroir, producers are able to grow a variety of grapes, from Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Oregon has been gradually getting noticed in the wine world. The state has warm, dry summers with cool evenings, helping to preserve acidity in the grapes. Around two thirds of the grape production in the region is Pinot Noir, as well as a small amount of Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris.
Washington’s wine production started in the mid 1960s, and there are now over 1000 wineries in the region. Like California, the area experiences warm days and cool nights. Many of the vineyards are located in the Cascade Mountains, which help to protect vineyards from harsh wet weather. The five main varieties grown in Washington wine country are Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Riesling, Merlot and Syrah.
New York State is third in the US’ wine production, after California and Washington. It has a milder climate compared to its west coast counterparts, the Empire State is home to around 2000 wineries. Popular grapes grown in the area include Riesling, Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer.
Virginia was the first recorded wine-growing area in the country, and now has over 300 wineries across the state. Its terroir is diverse to say the least, with coastal inlets to wild mountainous terrain. The most widely planted variety here is Chardonnay, followed by Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Viognier.
