Wine regions in Italy

Like we mentioned, there are a huge array of wine regions in Italy – too many to mention right now. Here are just a few:

Veneto

This is the most productive region in the north east of Italy, and home to famous tourist cities such as Verona and Venice. It has a moderate climate and a hilly landscape, stretching west to Lake Garda and north towards the Alps and the Austrian border. Here the temperatures are cooler than in the south, which suits many white wine varieties that are grown here. You can find Prosecco, Pinot Grigio and Merlot here among other varieties.

Marche

Marche (otherwise known as Le Marche) is known for being incredibly loyal to local varieties. There are two main varieties grown here: Verdicchio and Montepulciano. Many of the vineyards can be found on the region’s rolling hills, with a moderate climate that like Veneto is very suitable for white wine production.

Sicily

Beautiful Sicilian wine is an offer you can’t refuse. Sicily is the southernmost wine growing region in the country and is host to a bountiful array of native grape varieties. Nero d’Avola is most widely planted here, in addition to Frapato and Marsala among others. The hottest and driest area in Italy, many of the vineyards can be found close to the Peloritani Mountains.

What kind of wine from Italy does Fine Wines Direct UK offer?

We love Italian wine here at Fine Wines Direct UK. Here are a few of our favourites.

Borgo Alato Prosecco Extra Dry Spumante Italy

This beautiful Prosecco is a light pale yellow colour, with a delicate and complex bouquet with fruity notes of peach and green apple. The drinker can also enjoy delightful secondary notes of acacia and lilac. A stunning wine, it is fresh and light on the palate with balanced acidity. Perfect as an aperitif, it is also ideal for accompanying hors-d’oeuvres  and delicate first courses.

Botter Pinot Grigio, Delle Venezie DOC, Italy 2020 ORGANIC

A delicious Pinot Grigio from Botter, this wine has a large and fresh bouquet with notes of apple. On the palate it is clean and fresh, with a typical mineral taste. It makes an ideal accompaniment to fish courses or can simply be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif.

Chianti Classico, DOCG Botter, Tuscany, Italy 2018

A Tuscan delight from Botter, this Chianti has been aged in oak barrels for at least 12 months. Pour into a glass and marvel at its deep ruby red colour. This wine is characterised by fruity notes of cherry, closely followed by spicy notes of black pepper. On the mouth, the drinker can enjoy a full, dry, harmonious flavour and is slightly tannic.

Aresca, Nebbiolo d’Alba DOC, Piemonte, Italy, 2016

Made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes grown around the hills of the Alba town, this wine is truly something to behold. On the nose it is soft and fragrant at first, becoming ethereal over time with notes of red fruit and spices. A dry wine, with hints of violet, raspberry and almond. Our experts recommend trying this wine with red meats or cheese, or to enjoy it on its own.
