Penderyn Whisky

Deep in the heart of wild South Wales, in a small rural village called Penderyn, you will find one of the finest whisky distilleries in the world.

In the foothills of the rugged Brecon Beacons, you will find its original distillery – and it now has a sibling in Llandudno, North Wales. Penderyn distillery houses its unique whisky ‘still’, a single copper pot which was designed by Dr David Faraday to produce a flavourful spirit with excellent strength and purity.

What makes this Welsh whisky stand out from the others? Unlike Scottish and Irish distilleries that use a two or three pot still, Penderyn’s technology has been developed to allow the incredible flavour from just the one still. The characteristics of the whisky is also influenced by the hand-selected barrels, and local Welsh water from nearby national parks. Every single element of the process is overseen by their expert all-female distilling team, who ensure high quality whiskey is made again and again.

We are proud to offer a selection of stunning Penderyn whiskies and other spirits here at Fine Wines Direct UK. Find out more about the others we have available here.

What does Penderyn distillery produce?

We are proud to offer a collection of fantastic Welsh whisky and other accompanying spirits from Penderyn distillery, including a number of their award winning bottles of gin, Welsh cream and vodka.

Madeira Single Malt Whisky

This award-winning single malt whisky is matured in bourbon barrels and finished in Madeira casks which give it a generous flavour of subtle complexity. It is a generous 46% ABV and the drinker can enjoy aromas of cream toffee, rich fruit and raisins. On the finish, expect notes of vanilla and tropical fruit. A real treat.

Peated Single Malt Whisky

This delicious whisky is aged in ex-bourbon barrels and ex-peated Scotch whisky casks which bring out its character. A classic malt whisky, the drinker can expect notes of sweet aromatic smoke with undertones of vanilla, green apple and refreshing citrus. It has a gentle array of flavours, and vanilla and smoke linger on the finish.

Portwood Single Malt Whisky

This gorgeous whisky boasts aromas of rich dried fruits, complemented by dark chocolate and cranberries. After that, the drinker can expect a hint of toasty oak with a baked nutty dryness. On the palate enjoy a creamy richness with notes of honey and spices, with a smooth, soft, oaky finish.

Merlyn Welsh Cream Liqueur

We know this isn’t whisky, but we think it deserves an honourable mention. Step aside, Irish cream – there’s a new kid in town. Penderyn’s Merlyn Welsh Cream Liqueur is a beautiful, award winning drink. On the nose the drinker will enjoy a warming creamy texture and fudge toffee, with hints of vanilla, banana and exotic fruits lingering in the background. On the palate the fruits are more prominent and intermingle with vanilla, no wonder it won the ‘UK Cream Liqueur’ category at the 2018 World Liqueur Awards.

Penderyn: An award-winning distillery in the heart of Wales

Trail-blazing Penderyn was the first commercially available whisky in Wales since the 1800s. Launched in 2000 under the name ‘Welsh Whisky Company’, the company has since changed its name to reflect the rural village where it is made.

Since its inception more than 20 years ago, Penderyn has gained worldwide acclaim for its range of Welsh single malt whiskies and has won multiple awards across the UK and beyond. The Welsh distillery has even been making waves across the pond in recent years, after it took home two Double Golds at the New York Wine and Spirits 2021 competition. This brings the total number of international awards to more than 70 in the last few years, which has really helped put Welsh whisky and Wales as a spirit producing country on the map.

In addition to its outstanding single malt whiskies, the company has since expanded its offering to include cream liqueur, vodka and gin. The distillery also has an accompanying visitor centre opened by Prince Charles in 2008, which receives over 30 thousand visitors every year. Here they offer tours, masterclasses and corporate events to help people learn more about this beautiful spirit, its history and heritage.

As a result of such success, the company is expanding: a new distillery opened in Llandudno in North Wales in May of 2021, and a further is planned for Swansea coming soon.
