Buy Lebanese Wine Online

Winemaking has had a long and rich history in Lebanon; it has been produced there for over 6000 years, all the way back to biblical times. Viticulture has played a huge part in the country’s history and in Jewish, Christian and Roman religions.

The country has had a turbulent past which has made things difficult for wine producers, but since the end of the Lebanese civil war in the 90s the wine production has increased dramatically and Lebanase wine is being recognised worldwide. The country produces around 10 million bottles every year, about half of which is exported all around the world for people to enjoy.

Most of Lebanon’s wine is produced in the famous Bekaa valley, home to wineries such as Château Musar and Château Ksar. The climate is mediterranean, with hot and dry summers and cool evenings, and a regular, predictable amount of rainfall. The majority of wine produced is red, with a predominantly French influence. The most popular grapes are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Grenache whilst the whites are Clairette and Chardonnay.

Chateau Musar

Synonymous with wine in Lebanon, Musar was established way back in 1930 by Gaston Hochar, who was strongly influenced by time spent in Bordeaux and that influence still shows today in the French style of wine that is produced at the winery.

Situated about 30km north of Beirut, Musar is a family run business and is looked after by third generation Hochars. Located in the southern part of the Bekaa Valley, the winery is sheltered by the surrounding mountains and boosted by mild summers and minimal rainfall in the winter.

 The perfect partnership

A good rule of thumb with food and wine pairings is that, ‘if it grows together, it goes together’. We know everyone has individual tastes but if you have a bottle of Lebanese wine and don’t know where to start, we’ve got a few delicious combination suggestions.

  • Rose: A typical bottle of Lebanese rose wine is light, easy to drink and not too fruity, and goes well with mezze style appetizers such as hummus and baba ganoush.
  • Red: Try a Lebanese red with a spicy, meaty dish such as pork or lamb.
  • White: Like many white wines, they will pair perfectly with a tasty seafood dish such as crab or prawns.

Impress at your next dinner party

We all love a good fact, so next time you’re hosting a dinner party why not impress with your knowledge as well as the wines you’re serving?

You may well be interested to know that Lebanon is the spiritual home to Bacchus, the god of wine. In Bekaa Valley, you can find a huge temple dedicated to Bacchus, which is one of the best preserved Roman ruins in the world and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It was also used as a stronghold for Palestinian and Syrian forces during the Lebanese civil war in the 1970s, so it’s fair to say it’s got a interesting history.
