The Grapes

All the wines produced here are organic, and the vineyards are worked by hand when possible to ensure the best possible quality. Extensive use is made of the best in traditional winemaking methods coupled with the advantages of modern technologies and temperature control during vinification. A variety of grapes are grown at Chateau du Seuil:

  • Merlot – Merlot is one of the most widely planted grape around the Bordeaux regions, and can be used for both blending and for varietal wines. Commonly across the region and at Chateau du Seuil, it is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. On its own, Merlot has dark fruit flavours such as blackberry, plum and dark cherry.
  • Cabernet Franc – The third of the popular blending trio in Bordeaux. It produces a lighter wine than Cabernet Sauvignon, and depending on the growing style can have aromas of cassis, raspberry and tobacco.
  • Semillon – Semillon is one of few white wine grapes that are approved to grow in the Bordeaux region. An important blending component in white Bordeaux wines, on its own it has typical taste notes of lemon, pear and apple.
  • Sauvignon Blanc – Sauvignon Blanc is one the world’s most loved white wine varieties. Chateau du Seuil blends it with Semillon to create their trademark white wines. Some of the most common characteristics of Sauvignon Blanc include fruit flavours such as white peach, and hints of grass and vanilla.
  • Cabernet Sauvignon – This grape gives the wine a tannic structure and is both powerful and gentle at the same time. Its typical nose of green pepper and blackcurrant distinguishes it from other red varieties.
