Tasting notes
Fantastic rich red wine made using the Castelao grape grown in the best vineyards of Adega Camolas, Setubal, Portugal. Very intense nose of black fruits, leather, cigar box, liquorice and black pepper. Full bodied with strong tannins. Refreshing acidity that balances perfectly all these dark and intense flavours. Long and intense finish. Better enjoyed decanted.
Background
The “Adega Camolas” is a family business, adjacent to the Arrábida Natural Park located on the Setubal Peninsula, south of Lisbon, and have been producing wines since the 70’s. The brand “Camolas” finds its origin using the founder’s family name, one of the most emblematic in the Setubal region. The “Camolas Grande Escolha” is a tribute to the Castelao grape, widely found in Setubal. The wine is vinified in stainless steel vats, with a controlled temperature at 26ºC with daily pump-overs and “pigeage”, in order to fully extract the fruity aromas and the desired colour. After the malolactic fermentation aged for 18 months in French oak barrel. The result is a wonderfully rich red wine showing all the layers of complexity of the Castelao grape variety.
