The wine regions in Spain

Wine is produced all across Spain, from Navarra to Catalunya, Murcia to Castilla y Leon and of course Valencia.Spain is home to more vines than any other wine producing country on earth. It has a rich and diverse topography, from the snow-capped Pyrenees mountains to the sunny, sandy south.

Rioja

We couldn’t not mention Rioja when talking about Spanish wine regions. Arguably the most famous, it has three subregions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja. It has breathtaking landscapes and is a real hotspot for wine tourism. The climate is mostly continental with influences of the Atlantic and Mediterranean at various points. The majority of Rioja wine is red, but can also be white, pink or occasionally sparkling.

Andalusia

Wine has been produced in Andalusia for more than 3000 years. Although quite a harsh landscape, there is more rainfall in the area than in many other parts of southern Spain. It’s home to the world’s most famous fortified wine – Sherry – which you can find out more about here.

Galicia

This wine region is located in northwest Spain, with the Atlantic Ocean on both sides. The area has an abundance of rainfall and sunshine, and the area mostly focuses on producing white wines made from grapes of Albarino, Loureiro, Treixadura, or Torrontes.

Ribera del Duero

Sitting alongside the banks of the Duero river, Ribera del Duero focuses on producing red wines. Wine regulations dictate that Tempranillo grapes make up the majority of each wine produced in the region, with the rest made up of others such as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon.
