Château Talbot ranks among the most familiar Bordeaux estates for UK wine enthusiasts—unsurprising given its historical link to John Talbot, Earl of Shrewsbury and English military commander. In 1453, he was defeated and killed at the Battle of Castillon, a turning point that returned Bordeaux and its vineyards to French control after more than three centuries under the British Crown.

In the modern era, the estate has been owned by the Cordier family, and its red wines have built a longstanding reputation for consistency and reliability. One of the largest properties in the Médoc, Château Talbot spans 102 hectares of contiguous vineyards, located inland from the Gironde River, just west of the village of Saint-Julien-Beychevelle.

In 1855, at the time of the Médoc and Graves growth classifications ordered by Emperor Napoleon III, Château Talbot was promoted as a fourth classified growth of Saint-Julien.
