Buy New Zealand Wine Online

New Zealand firmly put itself on the wine map with its signature Sauvignon Blanc, which exploded onto the scene in the 1980s. However, this is not all that NZ has to offer, as there are plenty of stunning red, rose and sparkling wines produced in the country.

NZ’s Sauvignon Blanc has cemented itself as a firm favourite by wine connoisseurs across the world, but that’s not the only wine made in the country. Along with Sauvignon Blanc, there are three other varieties that make up 90% of the country’s wine production: Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay.

In the 21st century, the country is also beginning to offer other fabulous wines including sparkling and rose varieties. The success of wine is partly down to the mild, maritime climate and also the commitment and passion of its winemakers.

Wine regions in New Zealand

Many of the wine regions in New Zealand can be found in the eastern coastlines of the North and South Islands. Boasting maritime climates, long sunshine hours and nights cooled by fresh sea breezes, it’s no wonder New Zealand is home to so many excellent vineyards.

Auckland really has something for all wine lovers. Not only is it home to some of New Zealand’s biggest wine companies, it also has an incredible array of boutique vineyards as well. It is a diverse area made up of three sub-regions: Waiheke, West Auckland and Matakana.

Hawke’s Bay

Hawke’s Bay has been a hotspot for winemaking since the mid 1800s. A large and diverse region with a mild climate and an abundance of sunshine make it ideal for growing all sorts of grapes. It is perhaps best known for its red blends in addition to a variety of aromatic white wines.

Marlborough put New Zealand wines on the map in the 1980 with its excellent Sauvignon Blanc. There are over 20,000 hectares of vineyards in Marlborough, which makes it the country’s largest wine region. It has a combination of a cool yet high sunshine climate with a low amount of rainfall, and offers a huge number of varieties from Pinot Noir to Chardonnay.

Martinborough is located in the southern part of North Island. It is a beautiful, small area with a town of around just 1500 residents and home to an array of boutique wineries. The area’s climate is quite similar to that of Marlborough, and its claim to fame is some exceptional Pinot Noir wines.

Central Otago

Central Otago is the country’s southernmost wine region, and is popular with tourists thanks to its huge mountains and dramatic skies. Thanks to the extreme climate, Pinot Noir flourishes in this region, along with excellent Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay varieties.
