Buy Malbec Wine Online

Settle down and pour yourself a nice glass of Malbec – known for its beautiful deep purple colour and full body. This delightful red wine is beautiful on its own, and is also commonly used in blends.

Unlike Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, the grapes need lots of sun and heat to mature. In many of its traditional growing regions, it isn’t grown on trellises but rather is cultivated in bushes, otherwise known as the goblet system. Because of its difficulty to grow, these grapes are grown in much smaller quantities than other red wines. A truly delicious wine, it’s even got its own national holiday – mark April 17th in your calendar, Malbec lovers!

Tell me more about Malbec

Malbec grapes are dark in colour, and need lots of sunshine and a dry climate in order to thrive. Although saying this, these grapes express terroir well, which is why a wine made in France tastes entirely different to that of one made in Argentina, for example.

Malbec wine is high in alcohol, around the same amount as Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon. It is well-known for its fruity, sweet jam-like taste. Tasting notes can include dark fruits, coffee, leather and even black pepper. It’s a versatile wine that goes well with a variety of dishes, such as lean red meat, charcuterie and cheeses such as Gouda or Manchego.

Where is Malbec grown?

Although you may associate Argentina with Malbec, France is actually its homeland. This inky dark grape is grown in a number of countries across the world.

Argentina: Malbec grapes were first introduced to Argentina in the 1800s, and it’s now the most widely planted grape in the country. It is primarily produced in three different Argentinian regions: Mendoza, San Juan and Salta.

France: The homeland of Malbec, it is one of the six grapes allowed for the famous Bordeaux blend wine. It is mainly grown in South-East Bordeaux and the Loire Valley.

United States: Malbec gained popularity in the US in the mid 1990s, where it was used in Bordeaux style blends. The main states where itis produced are California, Washington and Oregon.

Chile: The success of Argentinian Malbec inspired neighbouring country Chile to start growing its own grapes. In Chile, it is mostly used for Bordeaux style blends and is grown in the regions of Colchagua, Curicó, and Cachapoal.
