Buy French Wine Online

In many ways, it couldn’t be simpler. France equals wine. Wine equals France. France is a true benchmark of Old-World wine and is a favourite amongst wine lovers from the casual drinker to the connoisseur.  The home of Bordeaux, Burgundy and Provence, wine has been produced in France in huge quantities and incredible quality for thousands of years.

Wine in France is diverse, partly thanks to its varied climates and terroir which means it can produce all sorts of wine from dry to sweet and everything in between. In fact, the term ‘terroir’ was coined in France to describe the different environmental factors that can affect each type of grape. It is the source of grape varieties that have now made their way across the world, from Chardonnay to Syrah and Sauvignon Blanc to Pinot noir.

At Fine Wines Direct UK we are proud to have such an eclectic selection of fabulous French wine, including red, white and sparkling varieties. They are available to buy from our online store or in person at our shop on Penarth Road in Cardiff, Wales. We offer free delivery on orders over £150 and you can save 10% when you order 12 or more bottles, so there’s truly no better place to buy your next bottle of fine French wine.

The wine regions of France

Bordeaux: Situated on the Atlantic coast, it is arguably one of the most famous wine regions in the world, and for good reason. The wines produced in this region are primarily reds, and are typically blends made from grapes such as Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and sometimes Cabernet Franc.

Burgundy: Otherwise known as Bourgogne, red and white wines are equally prominent in this region. There is great emphasis on terroir here, and the two predominant varieties grown are Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Champagne: This is both the most northern and the coolest of the French wine regions. These temperatures combined with chalky soils make it the perfect place for creating – you guessed it – Champagne. Find out more about the Champagne we have available here.

The Loire Valley: Loire is one of the most picturesque wine growing regions in France, filled with beautiful chateaus. Most of the wines produced here are white varieties, such as Chenin Blancs, Muscadets and Sauvignon Blancs.

Alsace: Tucked in the foothills of the Rhine valley, there is a heavy Germanic influence within the Alsace wine growing region. This is where many award-winning white wines are produced, notably Riesling and Gewurztraminer.

Provence: One of the southern regions, wine has been produced in Provence for more than 2,500 years. This makes it one of the oldest destinations on France’s wine map, and has a suitably excellent reputation to boot. Today, the region is mostly known for its rose wines, although it also produces red wines such as Syrah and Grenache.

Here at Fine Wines Direct UK we are proud to offer a fabulous range of French wines, including red, white and sparkling varieties. Here are just a few of our choice favourites:

Les Foncanelles Merlot, Pays d’Oc, France 2020

This stunning Merlot is fruity and intense on the nose, mixed with hints of spice and vanilla. The drinker can expect a well-balanced palate, with a medium weight, silky tannins and notes of blackberry and plum. We suggest trying this wine with grilled meats and vegetables or with a variety of cheeses.

Louis Latour Ardèche Chardonnay 2018

Louis Latour’s Ardeche Chardonnay is from vineyards on hillside clay limestone rich soils, resulting in a wine with crisp acidity and delicious flavours of pear and white peach. This is a delightfully fresh, appealing wine with considerable depth and quality.

Didier Chopin Champagne France NV

This beautiful Champagne has notes of ripe fruit and hints of pastries. Fresh, pleasant and enjoyable on its own as a delightful aperitif.

Foncalieu Chemin de Provence Rosé, Provence, France 2020

This pale rose by design is a beautiful blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault. On the nose, one can enjoy red fruits such as strawberries and raspberries, with a hint of more exotic fruit in the background such as guava. Fresh and clean on the palate, it emphasises the ripe strawberries and has a perfectly balanced acidity.

Louis Latour, Domaine de Valmoissine Pinot Noir , Coteaux du Verdon 2019

Domaine de Valmoissine is located on the site of the ancient monastery of Valmoissine at 500 metres above sea-level. This stunning Pinot Noir is ruby in colour, and has a complex nose of cocoa and ripe fruits such as strawberries. It has nice persistency in the mouth, is ample and round with silky tannins and hints of forest floor. Enjoy this delicious wine on its own or with grilled red meat or cheese.
