What is Champagne and how is it made?
Champagne wines are exclusively produced from grapes grown in the region of Champagne, France. These grapes have particular characteristics that are not found anywhere else in the world because of the geography, climate and soil of the Champagne region. These wines are produced by natural yeast fermentation in the bottle, and there are strict regulations producers of Champagne need to follow. These include things such as:
- Dedicated Champagne wine-making and storage
- A minimum of 15 months storage for bottled wines before shipping
- A number of particular grape varieties must be used: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Arbane, Petit Meslier, Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris
Champagnes differ in sweetness levels depending on the amount of sugar dosage. On one end of the spectrum is ‘brut nature’ which has no dosage and produces very dry wines, and the other is ‘doux’ which means the wine has more than 50 grams of sugar per litre.
Each Champagne producer will usually have its own flagship wine, often ‘brut’ or ‘extra-brut’. Sweet Champagnes used to be popular in the past but changing tastes in the wine world have introduced something called “no-dosage” Champagnes, which are bone dry.
