At the tip of the African continent, South Africa produces stunning wines that regularly achieve critical acclaim. Many of the country’s wine producing regions benefit from its Mediterranean climate, influenced by the blending of the Atlantic and Indian oceans.

Wine production is mainly situated around Cape Town, with the diverse terrain allowing for many types to flourish. The country’s signature variety is the red Pinotage, a cross between Pinot noir and Cinsault. The popularity of Pinotage has grown massively in recent years, which is now exported globally along with many others.

Tell me more about the wine regions in South Africa

South Africa has more than three centuries worth of winemaking history, which has flourished since the ending of apartheid and really put SA on the wine map. The majority of the wine industry in the country is situated across the Western Cape, which has everything from rugged mountains to valleys and plateaus which allows for all sorts of grapes to flourish.

Stellenbosch

Stellenbosch is arguably one of the most famous wine regions in South Africa. 25 miles from Cape Town, the area has a variety of terroir, from exposed hills to more sheltered valleys. This allows for a range of grapes to be produced: predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon which is often paired with Merlot to create Bordeaux blend wines.

Paarl

Another important wine region in South Africa, the climate in Paarl is fairly hot compared to the more coastal areas of the Western Cape. Think long hot summers and cold, rainy winters. It is known primarily for its smooth and robust reds, with the most predominant varieties being Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Shiraz.

Swartland

Swartland has a hot and dry climate, with a varied topography encompassing steep mountain foothills and gentle rolling hills. The region’s focus used to be wheat growing, but has since moved to producing rich fruit-driven wines. Popular grapes grown in Swartland include Shiraz, Chenin Blanc and Pinotage.

What kind of South African wine does Fine Wines Direct UK offer?

South Africa offers a world of wonderful wines, and we are proud to offer our customers some of the very best. Here are just a few of our favourites.

Oude Kaap Chenin Blanc, Western Cape South Africa 2019

Pour into the glass and you will find a wine with a beautiful pale gold colour and a youthful green tinge. The drinker can enjoy aromas of ripe pineapple, passionfruit and melon. A fruity dry entry is followed by a cacophony of tropical fruit flavours, a zesty acidity and a perky fresh finish.

Franschhoek Cellar ‘Baker Station’ Shiraz Western Cape South Africa 2020

This delicious Shiraz is full bodied with notes of plum, pepper and oak spices. You can expect soft, ripe tannins which provide a well-structured and well-balanced juicy finish with generous length. Our experts recommend enjoying this wine with spicy sausages, smoked meats or duck confit. Bon appetit!

Warwick Estate ‘The First Lady’ Sauvignon Blanc, Western Cape, South Africa 2019

This wine is a beautiful pale honey colour, with a nose of fig, pear, nettle, flint and lemon. Frankly there are so many layers to this wine that you can’t help but take a sip. The drinker can expect a bone-dry palate complemented by bright granadilla, lime cordial and citrus.

Boschendal Vin D`Or Late Harvest, Western Cape, South Africa 2018

A natural sweet wine, this wine has a variety of citrus aromas, elements of tangerine and hints of tropical fruit and honeysuckle. Drink this wine and enjoy its tremendous fruit core, which is quite simply an explosion of kumquat citrus with lots of concentration and a good balance. You can enjoy it now, or it will age with much complexity in the next eight to 10 years.

Brampton Wines Roxton Stellenbosch South Africa, 2017

This is a beautiful, seamless red blend. The Petit Verdot gives the wine a muscular structure, while the Shiraz adds its distinctive flavour and spice. The Malbec contributes bright berry fruit. Overall this wine has notes of delicious dark cherry, dark chocolate, spice and a lingering finish. Perfect with robust red meat dishes, try this wine with steak, venison or even a pulled pork burger.
