Australian Wine

Wide open spaces, the Outback, boiling hot temperatures and spiders too. These are all things we know about Australia, not to mention the wine. Australia is one of the biggest exporters of wine in the world, and it is always lining the supermarket shelves.

In fact, in 2020 alone it produced more than 10 million hectolitres of the good stuff. Wine production is a large part of the country’s economy, through things like export and tourism. Travellers flock to the country’s many vineyards to sample the delights the country has to offer.

Due to having such a diverse range of growing conditions, all sorts of wine is produced in Australia. Around a third of wine production in the country is Shiraz, with other important grapes being Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Tell me more about the wine regions in Australia

Due to being a vast country with a variety of climates, Australia is one of the most versatile wine-growing countries in the world. Here are just a few of its many wine growing regions.

Barossa

The Barossa Valley is one of the most famous and important wine regions in South Australia. Located north-east of the city of Adelaide, it has more than 10 thousand hectares of vineyards. The general climate in this region is warm on the valley floors, and cooler at the higher altitudes in surrounding hills. This Mediterranean style climate is ideal for growing full-bodied reds and robust whites, and the most prominent grapes grown in the area are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Grenache.

Clare Valley

North of Adelaide, Clare Valley has around 5000 hectares of vineyards. It has a generally warm climate, but with cool afternoon breezes that can significantly slow down the ripening process. The main varieties grown in the region include Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz.

Coonawarra

Coonawarra is a small but mighty wine region, part of Australia’s Limestone Coast. Summers there are dry and warm but the nights turn chilly, and cloud cover also contributes to the slightly cooler temperatures in the area. Coonawarra producers make some of the most world-renowned Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as excellent Shiraz and Merlot.

Rutherglen

You can find Rutherglen in North East Victoria. It has a classic continental climate and around 700 hectares of vineyards. These vineyards experience warm summer days and cool nights, thanks to the air flow that comes from the foothills of the Victorian Alps. The main grapes grown in Rutherglen are Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Durif (also known as Petite Sirah).

What kind of Australian wine does Fine Wines Direct UK offer?

We are proud to offer an eclectic variety of Australian wines including luscious reds and crisp whites. Here’s a few of our favourites:

Thorn-Clarke, Shotfire, GSM, Barossa, Australia 2018

Pour this wine into a glass and take in the bright crimson colour and purple highlights. On the nose you can delight in a concoction of ripe plum, mulberry and white pepper. Tasting notes include delicious cherries, forest fruits and enticing spices. A classic GSM blend, this wine has a finish of long, velvety tannins.

Thorn-Clarke, Eden Valley, Single Vineyard Selection, Riesling, Australia 2019

This Riesling is quartz like in colour with beautiful green highlights. On the nose you will enjoy expressive aromatics of lemons and limes combined with floral spice notes. Take a sip and delight in intense grapefruit and minerality, crisp and clean with the most delicate lemon sherbet on the finish.

Thorn-Clarke, Single Vineyard Selection, Grenache, Barossa, Australia 2020

This Grenache dazzles with its ruby colour and purple hues. Breathe in the aromas of bright fruit: wild strawberries, cherries and complemented by the subtle spice of white pepper. Drinkers will enjoy further notes of raspberries, plum, and just a hint of French oak. All in all, this is a juicy and medium bodied red that has a delicate and complex finish.

Thorn-Clarke, Single Vineyard Selection, Chardonnay, Eden Valley, Australia 2018

A stunning light straw coloured Chardonnay, this wine shows white peach, grapefruit and smoky background oak on the nose. Take a sip and enjoy a refined and textual palate, with abundant stone fruit and pear flavours. Thorn-Clarke age this wine in oak barrels, complementing the fruit and adding complexity.
