We are proud to offer a fantastic selection of Merlot, amongst a great collection of other red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. They are all available to buy online for speedy home delivery, and can also be found in our store in Cardiff, South Wales. Delivery is free when you spend over £150 and you can also save 10% when you order 12 or more bottles.

Over 600,000 acres of Merlot are planted around the world. The name ‘Merlot’ comes from a French word that roughly translates to ‘blackbird’. This likely refers to the appearance of the grapes, which are dark in colour. They tend to have thinner skins and fewer tannins per volume than Cabernet Sauvignon, and usually ripens earlier.

It’s often nicknamed an ‘easy red’, and is regularly recommended by experts as the first red wine someone should drink. It is also appealing for its ability to pair well with many types of food such as grilled meats and salmon. The lighter versions can also work well with shellfish such as prawn or scallops. It’s no wonder Merlot is one of the most popular red wines in the world!

Warm vs Cool Climate Merlot

Depending on where it’s grown, Merlot can take on subtly different characteristics.

Warm climate: When produced in warmer climates, Merlot tends to be fruitier, with refined tannins. As these wines are so bold, they are often aged in oak which adds notes of vanilla and chocolate. They are usually deep ruby in colour and are medium to full-bodied.

Cool climate: These Merlots tend to be more structured with earthy tones. When grown in cooler climates, it’s also often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s usually ruby or garnet in colour and can have slightly tart fruit flavours such as raspberry, cherry or plum.
